Student Technology Committee

We believe that technology is a cornerstone of UW-Stout's Polytechnic heritage.  Because of that, our Student Technology Committee focuses on technology-driven movements in order to improve student access to technology on campus. Working directly with the Assistant Chancellor for Learning and Information Technology and IT leadership, students are given the ability to make true change at their university.

Student Technology Fee

The Student Technology Fee is a tuition surcharge governed by UW System Administrative Policy 815 which all students contribute to.  Administered by the Student Technology Committee, the Student Technology Fee funds innovative. student-centered projects related to Technology.

The Student Technology Committee collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to give feedback on campus Information Technology.

Privacy & Security

The Student Technology Committee advocates for the data privacy and data security of students in relation to federal, state, local, and institutional laws/regulations

Current Working Projects for 2022

Portable Monitors for Students

After receiving positive student feedback, the Student Technology Committee is currently exploring different portable monitor models to include in a proposal to ask for funding from the Student Technology Fee to allow students to check out portable monitors for free in the University Library.

Charging Lockers

The Student Technology Committee is currently looking into the feasibility of a charging locker system being placed in either the Memorial Student Center or the Rec Complex. A charging locker would allow students to securely charge their devices without fear of theft or damage.

Recent Achievements

Student Printing Kiosks

In 2020 the Student Technology Committee funded a project for the installation of a printing kiosk within the Memorial Student Center.  Beginning in fall of 2021, students will have easier access to printing resources on campus through accessible machines and new printing software.

Wisconsin Data Privacy Act Resolution

The Student Technology Committee sent a resolution to state legislatures promoting legislation designed around improving data privacy for Wisconsin residents. These bills are inspired by the EU's GDPR regulations and are just one way the Student Technology Committee advocates for students.

Student Technology Committee Founding

After a redesign of the Student Technology Fee allocation process, The student-led Student Technology Committee was formed and met for the first time in the 2019-2020 academic year.  The committee is comprised of individuals passionate about IT security and innovation, and is led by the Stout Student Association's Director of Information Technology.  The committee also collaborates and is advised by campus leadership in technology and security.

Technology Resources Available to Students
