Learn about our processes & recommendations for dealing with compost, recycling, & trash collection in the residence halls!
ALL Stout housing residents are expected to properly dispose of their personal trash and recyclable items in the proper receptacles.
Bins and Bags: Trash and recycling bins are provided in students’ residence hall room. Trash bags are provided at the residence hall front desk. Recycling bags are not provided as they are not recyclable in our waste streams. Students may use paper bags to line their provided recycling bin if they wish.
Collection and Composting: We advise that you take your trash and recycling out at least once per week. Locate the nearest exterior collection center and place your item in the proper receptacle. If you used a plastic bag to collect your recycling, please empty the contents into the recycling and place the bag in the trash. Common area waste collection bins are intended for waste generated in that space (i.e.: soda can, water bottle, snack wrapper, apple core, etc…).
Residents may opt-in to the composting program at any time. Residents who choose to compost will be provided a compost bin and bags along with instructions to participate properly. Sign up for the composting program via the “Requests” tile in the Housing Gateway.

Once you sign up to compost in your residence hall room, University Housing will email you with additional instructions and expectations. The following outlines those instructions.
Picking up your new in-room compost bin and bags
Pick up your in-room composting unit and first set of compostable bags from the Housing Office at 170 Price Commons. Additional bags can be picked up at any time from your residence hall front desk.
Residence Hall Composting Process
Line your compost bin with the compostable bags provided to make disposal and bin cleaning easier.
Only campus-approved compostable items may be disposed of in your compost bin or the compost collection center bins. You can learn more about what can be composted here.
Take your compost out at least once or twice per week. If you leave it in longer than that, the bag may begin to deteriorate. Locate the nearest exterior collection center and place your tied compost bag in the proper receptacle. You may choose to take larger compostable items like pizza boxes and to-go containers out immediately after use.
Wash your compost bin at least once or twice per month to prevent unwanted smells.
This compost bin has been added to your room inventory report, please leave it with your room when you check out at the end of your housing contract. If you change rooms during the academic year, you will bring the bin with you.
You may opt out of the compost program at any time by emailing housing@uwstout.edu. You will have seven days to return your clean compost bin to the Housing Office at 170 Price Commons.
If you are found to routinely contaminate the compost stream, your composting privileges may be revoked.
Composting with Roommates
Please share these instructions with your roommates or anyone who plans on composting in your room to ensure that we keep our compost stream as clean as possible.
