The Stout Student Association joined the UW Divestment Coalition by passage of resolution 51.05.02, Support of Divestment Initiative from Stout Student Association, by the University Student Senate on October 6th. The UW Divestment Coalition is a growing, statewide movement calling for the University of Wisconsin Foundation to divest from fossil fuels companies, stocks, and comingled funds or other securities linked to fossil fuels.
The resolution reminds us that "UW-Stout is committed to sustainability... with goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and incorporating sustainability into the curriculum UW-Stout is constantly working to be more sustainable as a campus." Calling for divestment from fossil fuels is a logical step towards realizing these goals.
The resolution and UW Divestment Coalition are specifically calling for the University of Wisconsin Foundation to begin the process of divestment. Conversations regarding divestment more locally have not directly started, but this resolution is a step towards furthering the goal of divestment and eventually discussing the topic with UW-Stout administration and the staff and Board of Directors of the Stout University Foundation. SSA commits to conducting those conversations in an open and collaborative manner.
