In an increasingly complex legal environment, assessment of risk in campus life poses significant challenges for Student Affairs professionals. Striking a balance between student engagement, institutional protection, and adherence to a myriad of requirements – including local, state, and federal laws, as well as industry standards and best practices – can be daunting. Many professionals find themselves feeling overwhelmed.

Presenter Dr. James McGhee will provide this vital resource for professionals grappling with the complexities of legal compliance in campus life. Regardless of experience level, participants will gain valuable insights into evaluating and refining their risk management strategies, policies, and procedures.

Conduct a preliminary analysis of potential issues to make conversations with college and university counsel more productive and cost effective. By focusing on methods to mitigate legal risks, you will be able to strengthen your departments, programs, and organizations, ultimately fostering an environment conducive to success.

Gain crucial, actionable takeaways that will help you:
-Analyze your current risk management policies, practices, and procedures to identify points of strength and weakness.
-Articulate the meaning of foreseeability and negligence.
-Describe your institution’s duty to care and differentiate between those that are legal/compliance based and those we assume erroneously as professionals due to our practices and decisions.
-Articulate ten common areas of student engagement that create the most significant risk management concerns on campuses across the country and put plans in place to help alleviate them.
-Synthesize a strategy for teaching students and staff to spot legal pitfalls and limit overall exposure.

Presenter:
Dr. James McGhee is currently the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Associate Dean of Students at Randolph-Macon College located in Ashland, Virginia.
