Mental Health Tips – Starting a Successful Semester

“Get up every morning and remind yourself, ‘I can do this.’”

As you move into the first couple weeks of the semester, things can feel overwhelming and stressful.  Finding the balance between classes, friends, and obligations can be a lot to manage for anyone – and much of that is influenced by how the previous semester went as well. Stop and reflect on previous experiences and behaviors that either helped or hindered your ability to achieve your goals. Just a few simple changes can profoundly impact how you navigate a new course or even an entire program. As you work through the semester, I encourage you to explore different ways to help yourself succeed.

  1. Make a list—this helps you remember the things that you want to get done. Lists help keep you on track, plus there’s that little bonus feel-good moment when you can cross something off your list.

  1. Start small—don’t force yourself into getting everything done all at once. Choose smaller tasks to start with. This helps increase motivation to tackle the more daunting tasks.

  1. Make time—whether it’s setting aside 10 minutes a day to organize, or one afternoon a week, choose what works for you, but be sure to follow through with this small goal. Side note: if you have a roommate, this is an important conversation to have to reduce conflict on cleanliness and organization.

  1. Find what works for you—everyone has a different style and level of comfort that works for them. Think about what makes you feel the most comfortable and accomplished and set that as your goal.

  1. Surround yourself with positive people and schedule “Me” time! The people you surround yourself with have a big impact on how you see and approach your studies, and keep you feeling good. And practicing self-care is just as important as everything previously listed!
