Volunteer Opportunity at Wilson Place Museum

Volunteer Opportunity at the Historic Wilson Place Museum:
Your group would provide friendly volunteers to serve as Tour Assistants during Wilson Place tours for one month. This is a simple, social, low-stress volunteer role that allows students to engage with the community while learning local history.

Contact: admin@wilsonplace.org to sign up.

Time Commitment
Standard Tour Days
• Students assist with two tours (about 2.5 hours total)
• Each tour lasts about 45–60 minutes
Trolley Tour Days
• Approximately 1.5 hour total commitment
A typical month requires 4–10 volunteers total, and most students volunteer just once.

What a Tour Assistant Does
Tour assistants support the tour guide and help the tours run smoothly.
No historical knowledge is required — students will not be teaching the tour.
Responsibilities include:
• Welcoming visitors and helping organize groups
• Walking at the back of a tour group throughout the house
• Ensuring guests stay with the tour
• Assisting guests between rooms
• Helping maintain timing and flow
• Answering basic questions (or referring to the guide)
• Providing a friendly, welcoming presence
Physical Requirements
• Able to stand and walk for approximately 2 hours
• Able to go up and down stairs with the group
• Comfortable interacting with the public
We truly depend on our assistants to help each tour run successfully, so reliability is very important. We ask groups to select a month only if they feel comfortable covering those dates, and to communicate early if plans need to change. If a conflict arises, please work with your group’s leadership to provide a replacement volunteer.

Why This Works Well for Students
• Community engagement / service hours
• Team bonding experience
• Leadership and communication experience
• Exposure to local history and community organizations

Recognition
UW–Stout groups will be recognized as:
**Wilson Place Partner of the Month**
Recognition includes:
• Social media features
• Website acknowledgment
• On-site signage

Training
A short orientation is provided before the first tour.
Most volunteers feel comfortable within minutes.
