Are you feeling more anxious in classes, friend groups, or even at home? It’s ok. You are not alone. Anxiety can look like a lot of different things. Some people get irritated, feel their heart rate increase, sweat, have difficulty sleeping, or even feeling your muscles being tense. Here are some tips to help ease your anxiety:
Learn how to control your breathing. By taking slow, controlled breaths, you are helping decrease your heart rate and re-engage in rational thinking. Try square breathing: Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, breath out for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds. Repeat.
Splash cold water on your face. Or put an ice pack, or something cold, on your forehead, or back of your neck.
Find your routine. Sleep can sometimes be easier to come by if you have a stable nighttime and morning routine.
Identify and address your “worry thoughts.” Are you worried about a grade, a project, your internship? Remind yourself that you are here for a reason. You have gotten this far and that counts! Don’t forget that we all make mistakes and it’s ok to not be perfect.
Listen to your music. Sometime listening to a happy song makes you feel happy. Sometimes listening to a motivational song, makes you feel motivated. Try exploring new music and see what inspires you.
