We all have our own version of our American Dream, but it helps when we know who else sacrificed to make our very own Dream come true for us. This address focuses on overcoming adversity, living in two cultures, two languages, and two countries and yet struggling to fit in either of them. Additionally, living with a disability can be challenging both mentally and physically, however if we focus less on the negatives and more on the positives it can be highly empowering. Ernesto will share his inspiring and motivating story with us.
Family Privilege, according to John Seita, EdD (2005), a former foster youth and University of Michigan faculty in Social Work, is “the abundant benefits, mostly invisible, that accrue from membership of a stable family” (p. 81). The session presenters, Olivia Johnston, Lead Peer Mentor, Fostering Success; Nathalie Bonilla, Graduate Assistant, Fostering Success; and Gail Mentzel, TRIO Student Support Services & Fostering Success Advisor, will discuss Family Privilege within the context of the Fostering Success program and our students, share experiences to increase understanding of how students without this powerful asset navigate college differently, and provide suggestions to help create a campus environment that promotes equity in learning and success for students at Stout pursuing college degrees without the benefits that come with Family Privilege.
