Diversity Week - Family Privilege

Family Privilege, according to John Seita, EdD (2005), a former foster youth and University of Michigan faculty in Social Work, is "the abundant benefits, mostly invisible, that accrue from membership of a stable family" (p. 81). The session presenters, Olivia Johnston, Lead Peer Mentor, Fostering Success; Nathalie Bonilla, Graduate Assistant, Fostering Success; and Gail Mentzel, TRIO Student Support Services & Fostering Success Advisor, will discuss Family Privilege within the context of the Fostering Success program and our students, share experiences to increase understanding of how students without this powerful asset navigate college differently, and provide suggestions to help create a campus environment that promotes equity in learning and success for students at Stout pursuing college degrees without the benefits that come with Family Privilege.
