Penumbra utilizes the power of the creative performing arts to create more inclusive, compassionate communities. Facilitators will share personal stories about early encounters with race and racism and then discuss the creation of these monologues and explore how to engage in racial equity work. Participants will be given time to speak directly with the artists and to share their own stories. There will also reflection time and discussion. Participants will Learn: Explore how race, gender, class and other identity markers shape our opportunities, success, safety and circumstances; Reflect: Become more aware of how our intersectional identities determine how we see the world and how the world sees us; Act: Feel empowered to intervene in oppressive behaviors as they happen.

We all have our own version of our American Dream, but it helps when we know who else sacrificed to make our very own Dream come true for us. This address focuses on overcoming adversity, living in two cultures, two languages, and two countries and yet struggling to fit in either of them. Additionally, living with a disability can be challenging both mentally and physically, however if we focus less on the negatives and more on the positives it can be highly empowering. Ernesto will share his inspiring and motivating story with us.
