With less than two weeks of classes remaining until final exams, things are starting to get pretty exciting around here-- REALLY! Read on for informaiton about summer scholarships, growing vegetables, virtual commencement and a little photo campaign/project that we're doing.
We know that this semester has been difficult in ways that we could not have imagined on January 27 when it began. And we also know that many students are worried about getting home this summer, or indeed, what they will do if they cannot get home just yet.
Because of this, we have created a one-time summer scholarship for Stout students who are stuck in the US the summer. The value of the COVID-19 Relief Scholarship is:
$200 per credit
Maximum six (6) credits
Maximum award $1,200
To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in UW-Stout Summer 2020 courses from within the US
Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher following completion of Spring 2020
Not be sponsored by a home country government
Not be enrolled in a Customized Instruction (CI) program
Provide explanation of financial need
COVID-19 Relief Scholarship applications must be received by July 1, 2020 to ensure timely application to your student account. Please note that tuition for Summer 2020 is due by July 15, 2020.
ƒî× Will you be in Menomonie over the summer?
ƒî▒ Do you like to be outside?
ƒî╝ Do you like getting your hands dirty?
ƒÑò Have you ever wanted to grow your own vegetables?
You may know that Danielle is a member of the Menomonie Community Garden, a sizeable community of allotment gardens located on 9th Street E, south of Dick's Fresh Market. Members of the MCG rent plots of land to practice organic gardening andI have secured a half plot for our international students who will be here over the summer.
I have my own full plot to look after so I am looking for 3-5 students who would be interested and able to assist with looking after the student gardern from planting, to weeding, to harvesting fresh vegetables and herbs! (Don't worry, I can teach you!) My hope is that we will grow enough fresh food that we can share it amongst students who will be here over the summer. But there is much work to be done before we have anything to harvest, so if you are interested in helping with this project, please email Danielle ASAP so that we can develop a plan!
It is currently very fashionable to create photo mosaics sharing a message of unity during this time of social distancing. I'm talking about things like this. I would like to put together something similar but with international students (both in the US and abroad) and the message 'in this together'. I should hope that we can find at least eight people to help with this. If you would like to help, all you have to do is send me the following:
a picture of you holding a 'sign' that says the phrase 'in it together' but in your native language
Remember that it has to fit into a square image!
Bonus points for:
including your country's flag on your sign or in the background
wearing Stout gear (t-shirt, sweatshirt, etc)
big smiles
Once you have your photo, please send it to me through Instagram @uwstoutinternational or as an emal attachment by Sunday, May 3.
Credit/No Credit Option Deadline: May 1
The deadline to request Credit/No-Credit is 11:59pm on May 1. If you wish to receive CR/NC instead of a letter grade, please review information about the policy here and be sure to request the change from your UW-Stout email, to the Office of Registration & Records, being sure to include:
Full Name
Student ID
Course prefix, Number and Section (for example, SUBJ-101-003)
If submitting a request for more than one course, the course prefix, number, and section for each course should be listed.
Commencement Reminders
This month, a total of 1,191 students will graduate from UW-Stout. And while a traditional cap and gown ceremony won’t be possible with the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not let that stop us from celebrating our graduates’ triumphs.
Spring 2020 graduates will have the option to walk in either an on-campus commencement ceremony tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 8, or in a December 2020 ceremony.
