Mental Health Tips—Let’s Talk About Establishing Routines

“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret to your success is found in your daily routine.” John C. Maxwell

Welcome back to UW-Stout! Getting into the rhythm of a new school year can be difficult. Finding a balance with everything going on can be hard, as the combination of classes, homework, friends, and extracurriculars can feel extremely overwhelming.  As such, establishing healthy routines can help create structure in day-to-day life and can help reduce stress and anxiety. Here are some tips that will help you get into a successful routine for the new school year:

  1. Set an alarm, and stick to it—these are great reminders to help get something started, or transition from task to task. When you set your alarm to wake up, try getting out of bed before hitting snooze.

  1. Commit to a ritual – hug your partner, wash your face, make yourself breakfast – whatever you do in the morning, make it a ritual that marks the start of new day and a fresh start.

  1. Do things at the same time each day—first start by trying to eat your meals at the same time each day. Sometimes schedules can be difficult to align; try eating a snack at that time instead of a whole meal. Flexibility can be ok!

  1. Set small goals—break down large goals into smaller ones. This will help you feel more successful as routine becomes more set.

  1. Reward yourself! If your goal was to wake up each day by 8am, reward yourself by going out to breakfast with a friend on a weekend.
