Getting enough sleep is a very important part of having good mental health. It is recommended to get a regular 8 hours of sleep, and it is crucial to your health, recovery, and brain growth!
Go to sleep at the same time every night and try to get up at the same time every day (even on the weekends!) This will help your circadian rhythm have a natural schedule.
Don’t take naps longer than 20 minutes throughout the day.
Don’t drink alcohol or caffeine late in the day.
Avoid nicotine completely.
Have a regular exercise routine, but try not to workout in the 2-3 hours before you go to bed.
Increase bright light exposure during the day, and decrease it before bedtime.
Don’t eat a heavy meal late in the day, but a light snack before bedtime is okay.
Make your bedroom comfortable, dark, quiet, and a good temperature.
Follow a bedtime routine to help you relax before bed.
Turn off TV and phone and other screens at least 1 hour before bed.
Don’t lie in bed awake. If you can’t fall asleep after 20 minutes, get up and do a quiet activity, such as reading or listening to music, until you feel tired.
