Mental Health Tips—Transitions/Changes

“I believe that one defines oneself by reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. To cut yourself out of stone.” Henry Rollins

Transitioning into new roles and new seasons can be difficult. Taking new classes, getting a job, graduating, moving, etc. Any change comes with a variety of worry and comfort, and that is ok. Don’t lose sight of your goals when transitions and changes occur in your life.  Here are 5 ways that might help you in a time of transition.

  • Prepare yourself. If you know a change is about to happen, make a list of things that you know you need in order to be successful in this transition. Create a checklist of things you need to do before the transition occurs. The more prepared you can be, the less stress you will experience.
  • Try to maintain a routine. Finding a consistent morning or nighttime routine can help develop a sense of normalcy when transitions are happening.
  • Continue engaging in healthy behaviors: eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, and exercise. Meeting your physical needs is extremely important.
  • Connect with the people around you. Reach out to your friends and family often, but if you are in a new environment, try to connect with them too.
  • Be kind to yourself. Remember…change is uncomfortable. Check on your internal monologue and say, “I got this,” “I am capable of learning,” “I trust myself.”
