Mental Health Tips – Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
In the midst of winter, I found there was within me an invincible summer.
The cooler weather and less daylight during the winter months can cause many of us to feel less motivated and disengaged in everyday life. Some of us may experience the winter blues, while others suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Many of us can see how this impacts us, as we will feel sad, notice a loss of interest or pleasure in activities you usually enjoy. Changes in appetite are common, as are changes in sleep – usually sleeping too much. You can also notice a loss of energy and slowed thinking, or struggle with concentration. Others also can feel hopeless.
The change of seasons can be really difficult for many people. As such, here are some tips to help with seasonal affective disorder (SAD):
Make a habit of getting out for a daily walk. This helps your mood by breathing in fresh air and providing a change in scenery, all while exercising.
Add vitamin D to your diet and nutritional needs.
Plan fun activities and stick to those commitments. Once SAD begins, you’re more likely to pull back and cancel plans.
Get social with friends and family. This helps to stimulate your mind and mood by being around others.
Move your body with physical activity. It doesn’t have to be hard exercise, but moving your body will provide physical stimulation. An exercise group or class will also provide social benefits.
Reach out to your support network. Tell your family and friends how this change of season affects you so they can check in on you. They can also help to hold you accountable to your commitments and support you.
