Ted Talk Laura Vanderkam

Ted Talk Tuesday | How to gain control of your free time

There are 168 hours in each week. How do we find time for what matters most?

Time management expert Laura Vanderkam studies how busy people spend their lives, and she's discovered that many of us drastically overestimate our commitments each week, while underestimating the time we have to ourselves. She offers a few practical strategies to help find more time for what matters to us, so we can "build the lives we want in the time we've got."

Student Health Services | Telehealth

As the situation around COVID-19 continues to impact our student community, we want to assure you that UW Stout Student Health will continue to provide care through Telehealth during this time. We launched Telehealth through Microsoft Teams, as a measure of providing care while also following public health guidance on social distancing.

Students should first call to make a Telehealth or Phone visit appointment.  All callers will be screened for any respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, fever, runny nose, sneezing) and travel with an RN/clinician. Telehealth will be the appropriate route and best option for many visits.

To learn more about Telehealth, visit the Student Health Services section within the COVID-19 website.

UW-Stout IRB Remains Operational

At this time, the IRB remains operational. Please continue to monitor the latest information on COVID 19 at the designated Stout web page. You do not need to notify the IRB if you voluntarily and temporarily suspend human subjects interactions on your protocol due to concerns of COVID-19.

If you currently have in-person interactions scheduled with human participants through remainder of the semester and plan to continue research through alternative means (video conference, online technology. etc.), you must submit a request for a modification to the IRB prior to implementing changes in the protocol.  Please include revised informed consent documents and describe the modifications in the consent process, data collection procedure, and revised data management plans in your request.  Please submit your modification via the link. The IRB will review modified human subject protocols in the order they are submitted.

Become a poll worker

Wisconsin is looking for citizens to serve as poll workers for the Tuesday, April 7, election. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic many Wisconsin cities, towns and villages are looking for extra volunteers to assist with running the election. Those interested can find their clerk by searching using their addresses here. Click on the clerk’s email address to send him or her a message with “Poll Worker Applicant” in the subject line. Applicants should include a few words about their interests and their contact information.

To be a poll worker, a person must:

  • Be a qualified elector of the county in which the municipality is located (i.e., an adult citizen of the United States who has resided in the election district for 10 consecutive days and is not otherwise disqualified to vote)
  • Be at least 17 years-old
  • Be able to read and write fluently in the English language
  • Not be a candidate for any office to be voted on at the polling place at that election.

Poll workers do everything from check-in voters, help people register to vote, check photo IDs and process absentee ballots. Local clerks will provide training prior to election day. This is a great opportunity for college students to get involved with the democratic process.
