Subject: Week 5: Reminders & Updates fro ISSS

Hi First_Name,

Just Two Weeks Until Spring Break!

Things are busy; we know. You're tired; we know. School is hard; we know. But you're already a third of the way through the semester! In just about two weeks you will be getting a rest on your Spring Break Week. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Of course, there are other stressful things happening right now, both on campus and around the world. On campus, we have have students preparing for the Career Conference next week (March 3 & 4-- also lots of opportunities for Global Involvement Hours) and, of course, some of you have alreayd begun your midterm exams. Of course the Corona Virus is making headlines across the globe; please know that we are continuing to monitor the situation and the university will keep us all updated if and/or when there are updates.

For now, though, I wish you a pleasant end to Week Five and a successful start to Week Six!

Campus Employment Opportunities

A few days ago, I sent out a message regarding summer employment opportunites with University Housing. If you are planning to stay in Menomonie over the summer, this is an excellent way to make a bit of money. But while University Housing is already looking to fill their summer vacancies, there are a few other offices looking for student employees for now and in the future:

  • MSC is looking for Student Custodial Staff. Read more about the opportunities here.
  • University Dining is still looking for more student employees. Learn more here
  • The Sustainability Office is looking for an Assistanct Manager for the UW-Sprout Campus Garden. Read more about the position and application here.
If you are still looking for campus employment but aren't intested in the positions above, remember to check out Career Link, Stout Career Services' job search portal for all current students.

RESOURCES FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

By this point in the semester many of you may be experiencing symptoms of home sickness, perhaps even on top of your academic stress-- this is perfectly normal but it is sometihng you should be honest about with yourself. If you are feeling like you need a release or like now is a good time to get on top of some of your feelings, consider the following:

SHARE YOUR CULTURE

Having opportunities to talk about home, your family, your favorite foods or wear traditional clothes from home may be just what you need to perk you up. Consider making a traditional meal for your new friends or enjoy conversation over a tea or coffee from your home country.

COUNSELING CENTER: 410 Bowman Hall

The Counseling Center offers confidential services, and resources to ensure you receive the support you need to be successful.

Support is available in multiple ways:

  • Trained professional counselors offer individual, couples, and group counseling.
  • Online and mobile self-help resources help you track personal wellness.
  • Anonymous and confidential online tools help you assess mood, anxiety, or other topics.
  • Health and wellness events and activities hosted by students.

The Counseling Center is also home to the Zen Zone, an area with relaxing activities, massage chairs, books and light therapy resources.

ROOMMATE ISSUES: Talk to your RA about options

You've now had a few weeks to adjust to your shared living situation and we know that while  some roommates can grow to have strong great relationships, this is not always the case for everyone.  Talk to your RA if you live in University Housing and you are having roommate issues including:
  • difficulty communicating
  • being put in uncomfortable social situations (parties, drinking in the room, univited guests)
  • different worldviews
  • serious personality conflicts

Your RA will be able to advise you on how to manage the situation in a healthy way, offer a mediation or review options for mid-year room changes. Keep in mind that changing rooms is not always the easiest or approrpriate solution. Very often, a calm, honest conversation with your roommate(s) is all that is needed to resolve issues.

FAITH-BASED SUPPORT
There are numerous campus organization set up to help student connect with a faith-based community at Stout and in Menomonie. You can find many on CONNECT but also remember that the Jumu'ah Prayer Group meets every Friday in the Price Commons  (Gilbert Creek Room) for a 1pm prayer.

Fall 2020 International Student Tuition Scholarship Applications Due May 1, 2020

Current recipients of the International Student Tuition Scholarship are required to have all scholarship application materials completed and submitted by 4:30pm on May 1, 2020. Late applications will NOT be accepted.

As a reminder, a completed application consists of two parts:

  1. the completed application form
  2. Global Involvement Forms covering your 20+ hours for this semester

All of these forms are available for pick up from the OIE any time during our opening hours (8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday).

A note about Volunteer/Global Involvement opportunities: To date I have posted at least 50 hours worth of Global Invovement opportunities on CONNECT. I have posted for all major volunteering opportunities that I am aware of in this semester and I do not expect any more major opportunites to come up.

Scholarship recipients are required to identify their own opportunities; please use the resources available to you on CONNECT, through student orgs, and through the community to identify appropriate opportunities. Please plan ahead to avoid a scramble at the end of the semester when there are fewer opportunities for students.
