MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY VOLUNTEERS

For the second year in a row, we are looking for volunteers to participate in International Mother Language Day. The year's event will be virtual so we are looking for volunteers to record a short video (less than five minutes) which will be compiled and shared for the event in February 2021. I would like to see at least 10 students participate! So what do you need to know if you want to be involved?

  1. You will need to record yourself reading, reciting or telling a story in your native language. What you share can be personal or it can be a previously published work such as a poem or short story. Last year we had recipes, children's stories, poems, jokes and lots of other contributions.
  2. If there are multiple students in your language group, you can work together (safely) as a team to make one recording.
  3. The recording should be five minutes or less! But I will award you two hours of Global Involvement for your participation.
  4. Videos will need to be completed before the start of the next semester. The deadline is January 19, 2021.
  5. Danielle has more information for participants. Please email Danielle to get on the list and receive more information.

SCAM ALERT

Scams are when strangers target individuals and mislead them in order to illegally receive money or personal information. They contact their targets in different ways, often by making threatening phone calls. Scammers may target international students because cultural and language barriers can make it difficult to determine whether an offer for help or request for money is real or fake.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) has been made aware of a spoofing scam involving individuals using the SEVP Response Center (SRC) phone numbers (703-603-3400 and 800-892-4829) and claiming to be SRC representatives. The fraudulent callers are inquiring about Form I-94 documents and asking students to provide information regarding monetary transactions.

As a reminder, SEVP officials will NEVER ask stakeholders to provide credit/debit card/gift card numbers, wire transfers, or bank routing numbers, or to make bitcoin deposits for any purpose and you should NEVER divulge personal or financial information to unknown callers.

If you receive a threatening call or message from someone claiming to be a government or law enforcement official, you should:

  • Do not give the person any personal or financial information.
  • Try to collect contact information from the caller.
  • End the conversation immediately if threats and intimidation persist.
  • Contact Danielle and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations Tip Line
