With the dramatic increase in prices around campus as well as an increase in the overall price of living, an increase in student minimum wages is a necessity. Making this change a reality was two years in the making, however the subject has been on SSA President Cody Gentz’s mind for double that. When asked what drove them to make this change a reality, they said, "I became really serious about increasing student wages when I received a passionate letter from a student employee about how they, and their coworkers, felt they weren't being paid fairly. Every worker deserves a fair wage, and it became clear to me that our campus was falling short. What really drove me was knowing that this initiative would address something that my constituents care about and improve the lives of potentially hundreds of people.” This increase in wages will not only help student employees make ends meet and help pay their tuition, but will also encourage more students to apply. With more employees we can expect services at Stout to function more efficiently and for Stout students to be less drained from work and able to successfully focus more on their studies, improving grades and overall student mental health. The wage increase is currently being worked on by UW Stout administration, SSA is pushing for this to be completed by the end of the Spring 2023 semester so that it may take full effect later this semester or over the summer. Students can expect their new wages to start at either $9.50, $11, or $12.50 depending on the amount of training or experience required for the individual job.
