UW-Stout Women in Construction x Dunn County Sleep in Heavenly Peace
The UW-Stout Women in Construction (WIC) group is excited to host its 2nd annual Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Build Day on April 9th, 2025.
This event is dedicated to directly impacting the Menomonie community by providing beds for needy children. Volunteers will build and deliver fully assembled beds to local families in partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a national nonprofit organization. This event is hosted by the UW Stout Women in Construction with financial support by the Qually Family Fund.
How the Assembly Process Works
The build process is designed to be efficient and accessible to volunteers of all skill levels. Volunteers work in stations, each handling a specific part of the bed construction process:
Cutting & Sanding – Volunteers measure and cut lumber to size before sanding the pieces to ensure smooth surfaces.
Drilling & Assembly – Pre-cut and sanded pieces are drilled together to form the bed frames. Volunteers work in teams to assemble headboards, side rails, and slats.
Staining & Branding – Once assembled, the bed frames are stained for durability and branded with the Sleep in Heavenly Peace logo, marking them as part of this meaningful initiative.
Quality Check & Stacking – Each completed bed is inspected to ensure stability and safety before being stacked for transport.
Delivery to Families in Need (not on the same day)
Once the beds are built, volunteers load them onto delivery trucks along with new mattresses, pillows, and bedding. The team then visits the homes of recipient families, assembling the beds on-site and ensuring they are ready for use. This final step is often the most rewarding, as volunteers witness firsthand the excitement and gratitude of the children receiving a bed of their own.
