Details

Description: The Protest Art workshop will begin with an exploration of the history and impact of activist art, considering how artists have used visual culture as a tool to challenge social and political norms and inspire change. We will then examine several contemporary case studies involving public art, street art and graffiti, and performance, exploring how artists have used their voices to address issues of social injustice, discrimination, inequity, and nationalism. Through open dialogue in this workshop, students will consider how art offers us a space to disagree and challenge our assumptions. A reading list will be provided in advance to help prepare students for the workshop. Students from all majors and disciplines are invited to apply and participate. Please note that some of the imagery presented in this workshop may be disturbing.

Bio: Dr. Bland has been teaching art history at Stout for twenty-one years. One of her favorite courses to teach is Art and Controversy, reflecting her interest in First Amendment issues and the complex conversations surrounding freedom of expression. She has traveled extensively with students to Paris, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and New York City. She enjoys the process of discovery with students as they encounter works of art in person for the first time, and the new perspectives and conversations those experiences inspire.
