The Civil Liberties in the Workplace workshop will allow students discuss the ability of (or lack thereof) an employer to limit Free Speech in the workplace and the implications of such limitations or allowances. Can an employer limit an employee's civil rights while at work, such as 1st Amendment rights from searches or seizures, or 6th Amendment rights to representation? There will be an open discussion on the potential impacts faced by companies by allowing or disallowing certain aspects of civil liberties in the workplace. There will be some video based examples to help prompt the discussion and encourage open communications. In advance of the workshop participants will benefit from reading the book Private Censorship by J.P. Messina. It will be recommended post workshop and is a good overall look at this topic.
