Subject: Preparing to End your Exchange Semester at UW-Stout

Hi First_Name,

The Time is Near

Congratulations! You've [just about] completed your exchange semester! As you prepare to head back to your home institutions, please review the reminders below and contact Danielle if you have any questions.

Your 30-Day Grace Period

As a J-1 student you have a 30-day grace period following the completion of your program (the end date listed on your DS-2019). During this time you can travel within the US but you cannot depart the US and return.

The grace period ends when you depart the US, or no later than 30 days after the end of the DS-2019, whichever comes first.

Transcripts

A Transcript is a document that records your academic performance at an institution. The OIE will request a final transcript for all J-1 students once the Fall 2019 semester has concluded and the grades have been posted. Once ready, the transcripts will be sent by Danielle to your home institution. Please do not request a transcript for your home institution unless, for some reason, the one copy that I send is not enough.

However, int he future you might want a copy of your transcript for yourself or a future institution or employer. Thankfully, official copies of your transcript are always just a few clicks away. You can find instructions for complete a transcript request here or you can always do a search for 'transcript' on the Stout website. You will require your student ID number to request a transcript so do be sure to hang on to that information even after you leave.

If your home institution contacts you because they have not received your Stout transcript, please contact globaled@uwstout.edu and I will assist you.

Packing, Donating and Disposing

Packing: please be sure to check with your airline regarding your baggage limits. If you all of the sudden have more stuff than when you arrived (I know, not possible, right?), AND you want to take it with you, be sure to check how much it costs to have an extra bag (or a box) on your airline. This is typically quite a bit cheaper and a lot faster than posting items home.

Donating: University Housing will have donation boxes set up in the halls, please use them for goods that you cannot take with you but are clean and in good working order. This might include bedding, hairdryers, kitchen supplies, small appliances, and even clothing. Donated items will be repurposed to University Housing or donated to local charities. Of course, you can also sell or give these items to continuing students-- ask around, there's always someone looking for household items.

Disposing: If you do have items that cannot be donated or packed, please be sure to dispose of them appropriately by making good use of the compost and recycling bins in residence halls. If you have unopened food items that are of a cultural nature (cookies, candies, teas/coffees, etc), the OIE might be able to make use of them. Please contact Danielle to chat about it.

Consider Providing a Testimonial

We are always looking for student testimonials for marketing materials-- yes, YOU could be the face of UW-Stout! If you are willing to provide a testimonial, please send a short email with the following information:

  1. Answers to the following questions:
    1. What was your favorite thing about studying at UW-Stout?
    2. Was ther anything about the Menomonie community that stood out as being special? If so, please explain.
    3. Is there a person or office that made a difference to you during your studies? If so, who/what office and what was special about their efforts?
    4. What is a "must try/do" that you would recommend a future student try while they are at Stout (keep it clean!)
    5. How will you exchange semester help you in your future studies/career/achieve your life goals?
    6. Any other information that would help students prepare to attend Stout or decide to attend?
  2. good quality photo attachment (yes, we will probably use this in the marketing materials)
Email testimonials to: globaled@uwstout.edu

Regardless of whether you subimt a testimonial, we hope that when you return to your home institution, you will continue to represent UW-Stout at exchange fairs, pre-departure orientations and anywhere in between!
