Mental Health Tips—Eating Disorders

This week is Eating Disorders Awareness Week. We will discuss the difference between eating disorders and disordered eating and share resources for you or someone you know.

  • Disordered Eating vs. Eating Disorders
    • Disordered Eating: describes abnormal behaviors about food and eating but does not meet the specific diagnostic criteria for an Eating Disorder. Disordered eating can include behaviors like: skipping meals, restricting specific foods, or participating in fad-diets.
    • Eating Disorders: describes more specific and higher intensity of behaviors surrounding food and eating. This could look like excessive exercise, binging/purging, obsession about eating/body image. Eating Disorders often lead to unwanted physical symptoms as well including low blood pressure, hair thinning, muscle weakness, and impaired immune functioning.
  • It is important to note that these behaviors are similar, however, an eating disorder requires an increased intensity surrounding these behaviors.

How to help

If you, or someone you know, are experiencing disordered eating, reach out immediately. If you are worried about a friend, don’t tell them to “eat more.” Instead, let them know that you care about them and their health/wellbeing, and help connect them to the Counseling Center. The Counseling Center can help refer and connect with additional resources. Here is a list of some nearby resources for those struggling with disordered eating/eating disorders.

  • UW Stout Counseling Center (information listed below)
  • Rodgers Memorial Hospital, multiple locations
