Graduation Celebration

Calling on all Graduating Students for Spring/Summer 2020!

Are you graduating this spring/summer?  SSS would like to celebrate your achievement!  The SSS staff would like to display some of your information in our newsletters/on our website.  Look for a survey coming out this week if you would like to participate in our honoring of graduating students.  Thank you and congratulations on your accomplishment.

Office Updates

The SSS/FS Staff would like to emphasize that during these trying times, we are only a message or phone call away and will continue to provide virtual services to you, our students, Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm.  We will respond to any question or concern you may have.

Natural Reader

We know you are being inundated with information with this constantly changing situation. If you prefer to have information read to you rather than reading it, you can use Natural Reader, which is a free downloadable software that converts text to speech.  Link to download the free software is here: https://www.naturalreaders.com/software.html

SSS Support Survey

SSS has created a new survey to gather feedback from our students regarding ways we can best serve SSS students during this time and work to provide the necessary resources to you as you navigate the rest of the semester online and away from campus.

The link to this survey is: https://uwstout.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6Xy6YoqZWmz84HX

Please do your best to complete it as honest and truthfully as possible.  We ask for all students in our program to complete the survey.

Online Advising

The SSS and Fostering Success offices will be closed until further notice and all staff will be working remotely. This decision has been made following guidance from Chancellor Frank’s email update: “Due to the increase of COVID-19 transmission and in order to prioritize the health and safety of our campus community, we will be moving to limited on-campus operations effective March 17, 2020, until further notice, and therefore limiting the number of employees who will remain on campus.”

Therefore,
until further notice, all appointments and communication will move to an online format. Please read carefully through this whole notice for how to contact your advisors.

There are THREE options for contacting advisors:

OPTION 1: EMAIL

OPTION 2: INSTANT MESSAGING THROUGH MICROSOFT TEAMS

Directions for Desktop version:
1. Navigate to https://teams.microsoft.com OR Search “Teams” in your Windows search bar (it should be downloaded to your laptop). You may be prompted to login with your UW-Stout credentials.

2. If you do not already land on the “Chat” page, click the “Chat” button in the left-hand column.
3. Search your advisor’s name in the search bar (see below)
3. Start chatting in the text box at the bottom of the screen.

Directions for mobile version:

Tutoring News and Updates

Updated Procedures for Online Writing Tutoring

To meet your tutoring needs during the transition to work remotely, there are two options that consist of asynchronous (email correspondence with written feedback on draft) and synchronous (live online tutoring) delivery of writing assistance.

For asynchronous writing assistance, follow these steps:
  1. Select “Email Correspondence” in the intake form and upload your paper: https://uwstout.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cISQfhfIo00C5Nz
  2. The Writing Specialist will respond within 48 hours once the paper is received and provide feedback addressing areas of concern and your questions.
  3. Best option for longer pieces of writing that is not time-sensitive.
To schedule a live tutorial, follow these steps:
  1. Schedule an appointment through Bookings: https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/TRIOStudentSupportServicesFosteringSuccess1@live.uwstout.edu/bookings/
  2. You will receive an email shortly after confirming the appointment with instructions on what equipment you’ll need as well as how to prepare for the meeting.
  3. The Writing Specialist will call you at your appointment time and work with you over Microsoft Teams using Microsoft OneDrive. You will need a computer connected to the internet and best to have a headset or earbud with mic to reduce background noise.
For step-by-step guides and more information on writing tutoring appointments, please visit our “Writing Tutoring Services” webpage on Connect: https://connect.uwstout.edu/sss/types-of-appointments/

Online Non-Writing Tutoring

Online tutoring with the Math Specialist Michael or Peer Tutor Colton is now available.  Scheduling the appointment will be done the same via the Tutoring Bookings Link.  You will need to have access to Microsoft Teams, a webcam, microphone and the internet.

To Schedule a Non-Writing Appointment

  1. Use the bookings link to reserve a time: https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/TRIOStudentSupportServicesFosteringSuccess1@live.uwstout.edu/bookings/
  2. You will receive an email shortly with a link to the SSS Tutoring Intake Form.  Please complete this before your scheduled appointment.
  3. The tutor/specialist will send a confirmation message via Microsoft Teams to you 5 minutes before the scheduled meeting time.  They will then call you during your appointment time.  If you need help installing Teams, please refer to the section above.

Wisconsin COVID-19: Resilient Wisconsin

The Wisconsin government has created a website for resources for help coping with the many changes COVID-19 has brought.  The site gives helpful tips for many things such as dealing with stress as well as links and number to support systems.  The link is: https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/resilient.htm

DO NOT MIX

Due to COVID-19, cleaning and sanitizing your home/workplace is very important.  The following chemicals are not safe to be used in combinations:

Bleach and Vinegar

Bleach and vinegar when mix creates chlorine gas which can cause coughing, breathing problems, burning and watering eyes.

Bleach and Ammonia

Bleach and ammonia produce a toxic gas called chloramine when mixed together.  Chloramine causes shortness of breath and chest pain.

Bleach and Rubbing Alcohol

Bleach and rubbing alcohol makes chloroform, which is highly toxic.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar

The combination of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar created peracetic/peroxyacetic acid, a highly corrosive mixture.

How to Take Your Temperature

Follow these 4 simple steps to take your temperature with a oral thermometer per the CDC website:

1. Turn the thermometer on using the button near the screen.

2. Hold the tip of the thermometer under your tongue until it beeps.  Do not bite the thermometer.

3. Read your temperature on the screen.  If your temperature is 100.4 F/38 C or higher, you have a fever.

4. Clean your thermometer with soap and water and dry it well.

For more advanced thermometers, such as forehead or ear thermometers, refer to the user guide which comes with the thermometer.  Also, make sure to wait 30 minutes after eating, drinking, or exercising and at least 6 hours after taking medicines that can lower your temperature, such as Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, or Aspirin, to ensure more accurate readings.
